ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Lindenwood men's basketball (8-21, 2-14 OVC) dropped their final home game of the season on senior day against Little Rock (18-11, 12-4) by a final score of 82-73. The Lions had four double-figure scorers on Saturday including three seniors.
"The four seniors mean a lot to us," said head coach
Kyle Gerdeman. "The thing about these guys is that in year two they believed in our program. They believed in coming here and to try and help us build. They have given us everything they've got, through the ups and down.
Keith Haymon II led the Lions with a season-high 18 points while hitting six threes. Lindenwood's 11 made threes against Little Rock tied their season high.
Darius Beane also scored 17 points and dished out seven assists. Beane shot 6-12 from the floor while shooting 4-6 at the line.
Little Rock started the game fast going on a 9-2 run to open up the game. Lindenwood's offense struck back with a 5-0 run of their own heading into the first media timeout. Haymon II hit two of his threes on back-to-back possessions to give LU the lead at 16-15.
Although the Trojans had the lead for the majority of the first half and started 7-9 from the field, they had over 10 turnovers in the first half which helped the Lions stick around. LU again took the lead at 20-17 after shots by Beane and
Colin Ruffin.
Little Rock then went on a 9-0 run themselves giving them the advantage at 26-20.
Keenon Cole ended the run with two fouls shots and gave him his first points of the afternoon. Haymon and
Nathan Johnson Jr. both nailed triples with under a minute to go in the first half to cut the lead to 37-32 at half.
Lindenwood shot 35.5% from the floor in the first half and were led by Haymon with 15 points. The Trojans had three players with eight points while shooting 57.1% from the floor. Little Rock scored 16 of their 32 points in the paint at the break.
Cole hit his first three coming out of halftime to cut the lead to two points. Lindenwood's offense struggled to start the half going 3-8 from the floor while Little Rock went 5-8.
Haymon's sixth and final three helped the Lions cut the lead to 48-52 but the Trojan's inside game allowed Little Rock to extend the lead. Makhel Mitchell for Little Rock finished the game with 21 points and 14 rebounds. They also finished with 40 points scored in the paint.
Beane turned up the offense in the second half after a and-one put the Lions behind one point 53-54. The Trojans again fed the ball to Mitchell down low helping Little Rock escape Hyland Arena with a victory. Lindenwood got to as close as four points late, but Little Rock prevailed.
Cole finished with 12 points in his final game at Hyland Arena while being held to just 3-15 shooting. Johnson Jr. was the other double-digit scorer for LU scoring 10 points off the bench. As a team, LU shot 39.1% for the game including 42.4% in the second half.
Lindenwood will end the season on the road with games at Southern Indiana next Thursday and Morehead State on Saturday. For more information go to lindenwoodlions.com.
