ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Lindenwood softball team (13-15, 2-5 OVC) dropped the series opener to Southern Indiana (11-11, 5-2 OVC), 3-2 in nine innings on Friday afternoon from Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

Amanda Weyh (L, 8-7) took the loss on the mound after allowing one run on five hits while striking out six. Weyh took over for Avery Wapp who tossed the first five innings, surrendering two runs and striking out six.

Southern Indiana got on the board first in the top of the third, but Lindenwood responded right away in the bottom half as Madison Noll hit her second homer of the season to tie things up at 1-1. USI regained the lead with one in the fifth to go up 2-1.

Lindenwood still trailed 2-1 heading to the home half of the seventh and down to its last out, Irelynn West hit one out of the yard to even the score at 2 apiece. The Lions strung a few more hits together in the inning but were unable to push the game-winning run across as the game headed to extra innings.

The Screaming Eagles put together a two-out rally in the ninth inning to grab a 3-2 lead and Lindenwood was unable to respond back as USI picked up the series opener 3-2. Overall, Lindenwood finished with five hits on the day. For Southern Indiana, Josie Newman picked up the win, spinning a complete game, while striking out 11.

Lindenwood will continue their three-game series versus the Screaming Eagles on Sunday for an Ohio Valley Conference double header starting at 12:00 p.m. CT. For more information go to lindenwoodlions.com.
