Men's Soccer Starts Season With 0-0 Draw At Milwaukee

Lions will host UTRGV on Sunday for first home match

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Lindenwood men's soccer (0-0-1) settled for a 0-0 draw on Thursday as they opened up their 2024 regular season against Horizon League opponent Milwaukee (0-0-1). LU's draw ended a five year streak of opening day loses.

"Was a typical early season match where both teams seemed like they were trying to find consistency on both sides of the ball," said Bertsch. "I think it was a match that was a little unsettled and hard to establish rhythm for both teams. Over the course of 90 minutes, I thought we created more than enough chances to get on the scoreboard and earn our first victory of the season but we needed more quality in those key moments. Defensively, we were pleased to earn a shutout on the road but know we need to continue getting better with each match moving forward. We look forward to kicking off our home non-conference slate at Hunter Stadium this Sunday."

During this defensive match, the Lions were out shot 11-12 but had five shots on goal including two from returning First Team All-OVC selection Ethan Blake. John Gates, making his LU debut, made an impact early with a breakaway in the second minute but failed to convert. Blake shortly after tried from 20-yards away but was knocked away by Milwaukee's Daniel Ibarra.

Lindenwood came out looking for offense posting seven of their 11 shots in the first half. The Panthers were able to contain the Lions' forwards in the second half with just four shots.

Goalie Enzo Gil was perfect on Thursday playing all 90 minutes making five saves. During the 64th minute of play, Gil made back-to-back diving effort saves to keep Milwaukee off the scoreboard. Luke Neely and Quinn Connolly played all 90 minutes for the Lions helping on the defensive side.

The Lions will return home to St. Charles, Mo. on Sunday, Aug. 25th for a matchup against UTRGV at 1:00 p.m. CT. This will also kick-off a LU soccer double header as the women's team plays at 4:30 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+. For more information go to lindenwoodlions.com.
