Men's Basketball Suffers Loss At Southern Indiana On Thursday

Jadis Jones posted a career-high 21 points in the loss

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Lindenwood men's basketball (8-10, 3-4 OVC) suffered a road Ohio Valley Conference loss on Thursday to Southern Indiana (7-10, 2-5 OVC) by a final score of 80-73. The Lions drop to 0-8 on the road this season and 3-4 in conference play.

Jadis Jones posted his second career double-double on Thursday after scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Jones was the Lions' leading scorer in the loss while posting a new career high in points. The 6-5 freshman shot 8-12 from the floor while grabbing 11 boards and drawing seven fouls. He also added three assists and two steals.

Anias Futrell continued his hot stretch in OVC play scoring 17 points on 6-16 shooting while making a team-high three threes. Futrell continues to make an impact on the defensive end of the floor with a team-high three blocks. Aly Tounkara also had two blocks in the loss.

Reggie Bass made his return to the court after missing the previous four games due to injury. The junior guard was the third Lion to reach double figures on Thursday with 15 points on 4-9 shooting while going a perfect 5-5 from the foul line. LU shot 17-26 from the free throw line while USI went 23-30.

Southern Indiana controlled the rebounding margin out-rebounding the Lions 46-27 including 15 offensive rebounds. The Screaming Eagles used those offensive rebounds to score 22 second chance points compared to 12 by the Lions. 

Lindenwood did take care of the ball on Thursday posting a season-low seven turnovers while forcing Southern Indiana into 14. The Lions were able to score 12 points off turnovers while USI scored 15. Lindenwood was able to out-score USI in the painted area 38-30.

Southern Indiana started out the game on a 12-0 run through the first four minutes of the ball game before Futrell got Lindenwood on the board. The Lions started the game shooting 0-6 from the field before getting a bucket to drop.

Over the next 10 minutes of action, Lindenwood would go on a 26-4 run to flip the script and take a 10-point lead with 6:47 remaining. During that stretch, Bass and Futrell combined for 21 points as LU shot 8-16 from the floor and 4-6 from three. USI went 1-10 from the floor as the Lions led 26-16.

Southern Indiana went on a 17-7 run over the final four minutes of action to head into the locker room tied with the Lions at 38-38. Futrell led all scorers as the half with 14 points as the Lions shot 11-30 from the field and 5-13 from three. USI shot over 46.0% in the first half but were forced into 11 turnovers.

The first 11 minutes of the second half saw a back-and-forth brawl with the biggest lead for each team being one point during that time span. Lindenwood's final lead of the ball-game came at the 10:33 mark by a score of 55-52. There was a total of 32 lead changes in the contest.

Southern Indiana stretched out their second-half lead to eight points with 5:51 remaining after a pair of free throws by Stephen Olowoniyi. Lindenwood was able to scrap back into the game cutting the lead down to one point after a Jones layup, 72-71, but USI's Jack Mielke made a three-pointer with 1:20 remaining to push it to a two-possession game. Southern Indiana would close out the game at the foul line, ending their five game losing streak.

Lindenwood shot 43.9% for the game while going 6-21 from three. The Lions also shot 51.9% in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Lions dropped to 8-10 on the season.
