EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Lindenwood men's basketball (6-9, 1-3 OVC) suffers a 47-58 loss at Ohio Valley Conference opponent SIUE (9-6, 2-2 OVC) on Saturday in Edwardsville, Ill. The Lions were held to their lowest point total (47) of the season while SIUE was held to their third lowest.
Markeith Browning II had a team-high 16 points in the loss where he shot 5 of 15 from the field including draining two three pointers. He also was second on the team in rebounding with seven while adding a season-high two blocks. LU had five blocks on the night while SIUE had six.
Jadis Jones and
Anias Futrell both contributed nine points each in the loss. Jones shot 3-6 on Saturday while grabbing six rebounds. Futrell also had nine points with a team-high eight rebounds. Both offenses were slow in the second half as LU was held to just 18 points.
Lindenwood was forced into 20 turnovers on Saturday tying their season-high. SIUE scored 17-points off those turnovers where LU scored five points off 14 SIUE turnovers. Both teams had 41 rebounds, but SIUE grabbed 17 offensive rebounds. LU did manage to out-score SIUE in the paint 28-26. The Cougars were able to run in transition scoring 18 points on fast break opportunities.
It was a slow offensive start for both teams as the Cougars led 9-5 with 14:33 remaining in the first half. The Cougars were able to extend their lead to 22-9 with just over eight minutes remaining in the half after a three by Ray'Sean Taylor.Â
After the Cougars managed to get their lead up to a game-high 16 points, Lindenwood closed the gap heading into halftime. Over the final minute of the first half, LU went on a 5-0 to cut the lead to 34-29 at the break. LU shot 34.4% from the floor in the half and 5-7 at the line. Browning II led the way with seven points. SIUE shot 41.2% from the floor in the half while draining five threes.
Coming out the second half, Lindenwood tied the game at 34-34 after Browning's second three of the night. Lindenwood hovered around the next couple minutes before SIUE opened back up a five-point lead with 14:04 remaining (37-42).
Lindenwood cut the lead to four with eight minutes remaining, but it was all SIUE after that point as they out-scored LU 9-2 the remaindered of the game. The Lions shot 28.6% from the floor over the final 20 minutes of the game and shot 1-8 from three. SIUE was held to 1-11 from three in the second half, but held on to secure the win.
