Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – The Lindenwood men's hockey team (2-2-0 Independent) picked up their second consecutive win with a 7-4 victory over Lake Superior State (2-2-0, 0-0-0 CCHA) on the road on Saturday evening.
Game Overview
Down 2-0 in the first period, Lindenwood got on the scoreboard with a fantastic shorthanded goal by
Adam Raesler. After gaining possession in the defensive zone, Raesler carried the puck in on the right side, stepping around a Lake Superior defender before nestling a shot into the right side of the net for a score.
The Lions tied the game just two minutes later with a power play goal, as
Jaeden Mercier buried a shot from the left side faceoff circle following a shot by
Giovanni Morneau that deflected off the goaltender's right leg pad.
Nolan Seed, along with Morneau, assisted on the score.
Lindenwood made it three unanswered with a little over a minute remaining in the period, as a three-on-one fast break allowed
Charles Savoie to find a charging
Adam Raesler in the slot, who beat the Laker goaltender for his second goal of the game.
LSSU went on the power play less than a minute into the second period and tied the score on a Branden Piku goal, but the Lions punched back with a
Giovanni Morneau goal assisted by
Jaeden Mercier and
Olivier Houde.
The score remained 4-3 until the eighteenth minute of the period, when Lindenwood scored a pair of goals in quick succession. The first score was a
Louis-Philippe Fontaine power play goal assisted by Savoie and
Ethan Elias before
Michael Bevilacqua added to the LU lead just 41 seconds later with a score from the top of the slot that was assisted by
Ty Hipkin and
Ethan Zielke.
The Lions would carry a 6-4 lead into the second intermission after the Laker got one back with a short-handed goal by Jordan Herrington with 28 second remaining in the second period.
However, it would be LSSU's last goal, as the Lindenwood defense blanked the Lakers in period three with a pair of successful penalty kills. The Lions tacked on one more score in the contest's waning seconds with
Giovanni Morneau scoring on an empty net.
