MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The Lindenwood men's hockey team (0-2-0) fell 7-2 in their opening weekend finale against No. 20 Wisconsin (2-0-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) on Saturday night. Special teams were the story of the game, with the Badgers collecting four of their goals on the power play.
Game Overview
Wisconsin scored three goals within a five-and-a-half-minute stretch in the first period that gave them a commanding lead after the first 20 minutes. Two of the three scores were power play conversions by Christian Fitzgerald.
The Lions responded in the second period with two power play goals of their own, with
Louis Philippe Fontaine scoring on a feed from
Ethan Elias and
Charles Savoie for the first Lindenwood goal of the season.
Christian Fitzgerald completed the hat trick four minutes later to push the lead back to three, but following back-to-back Badger penalties, LU took advantage of a three-on-five opportunity with a
Giovanni Morneau goal to make the score 4-2 heading into the final intermission.
Nolan Seed and
Charles Savoie assisted on the score.
However, following another Lions penalty at the end of the second period, Wisconsin started the third with a man advantage and Quinn Finley took advantage to score the Badgers' third power play goal of the night. Lindenwood's trouble was compounded just two minutes later as Simon Tassy found the back of the net to give Wisconsin their biggest lead of the night.
The Badgers would tack on one more goal with a little over a minute remaining in the game following the ninth Lindenwood penalty of the contest.
