HUNTSVILLE, AL. - Lindenwood Men's Basketball wrapped up the Bulldog Bash at Alabama A&M on Sunday afternoon, dropping their second game to the host Bulldogs by a final score of 74-65.
Dontrez Williams started his first game for the Black & Gold and scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
In the first half, the Lions went up 14-9 with 10 minutes left as Williams and
Anias Futrell combined for 10 of the first 14 points for Lindenwood. Futrell got to the free throw line early in the game, knocking down all four of his attempts in the first 20 minutes. After
Mekhi Cooper put LU in front 17-14 on an and-one basket, the Bulldogs responded with a 10-2 run to take a 24-19 lead with just over five minutes to go. The Lions would roar back however, drawing contact in the lane to get to the charity stripe. As a team, they shot 7-9 from the line in the first half, including
Clayton Jackson sinking two free throws with 4:20 left to cut Alabama A&M's lead to 26-23. Lindenwood got a defensive stop following the Jackson free throws and on the next trip down the floor,
Jadis Jones found Futrell wide open in the left corner to tie the game at 26 at the under four media timeout. The two teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half, but the Bulldogs would take a 34-32 lead at the break.
Anias Futrell led the Lions in the first half with nine points and made the only three pointer in the half, as the team went 1-10 from deep in the opening half of play.
The second half saw both teams make several runs throughout the last 20 minutes of the game. After Alabama A&M took a 42-38 lead with 15 minutes left, the Lions responded with a 4-0 run to tie the game at 42 as Williams and Futrell each scored a basket during the small run to pick up right where they left off in the first half. Williams would continue to be an offensive threat, knocking down a three pointer to tie the game at 45, and getting to the line with 9:30 left, making it a two point game as Alabama A&M was clinging to a 51-49 lead. That would be the closest the Lions would get to tying the game in the second half, as the Bulldogs went on two separate 6-2 runs to distance themselves from the Lions by a final score of 74-65.
Lindenwood finished the game 4-22 from three point range, and shot 44.4% from the field. The Lion's bench contributed 18 points, with 16 of those coming from
Anias Futrell. LU will be back in action on Thursday as they will conclude their four game road trip at Indiana. Tip off is set for 5 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network.
