COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Lindenwood women's soccer team's (10-5-5, 5-2-2 OVC) season came to an end with a 2-0 loss to Tennessee Tech (7-6-8, 6-0-3) in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday evening. The Lions were unable to convert on some early opportunities before eventually conceding a pair of late goals.
Match Overview
The Lions were on the front foot early, applying heavy offensive pressure on the Golden Eagles defense with six shots in the contest's first 18 minutes compared to just one for Tennessee Tech. Three of those tries were on goal, but TTU goalkeeper Maggie Conrad was up the task and kept LU off the board.
Following Lindenwood's early offensive flurry, the Golden Eagles outshot the Lions 5-1 through the remainder of the half but were only able to muster one shot on goal, which was handled by
Caroline Ritter, and the match headed to the break tied up 0-0.
In the second half, it was the Golden Eagles setting the pace, outshooting the Lions 12-1 and drawing seven corner kicks compared to zero for Lindenwood. However, a pair of fantastic saves by
Caroline Ritter - including a leaping effort to turn away a strike from the top of the box, and a diving save on a TTU free kick a few minutes later - kept things even with less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
Tennessee Tech finally broke through in the 79th minute, though, with Katie Toney rising and using her head to redirect a perfect pass from Tori Soutuyo into the back of the net. A few moments later, a foul in the box by the Lions gave the Golden Eagles an opportunity from the penalty spot, which was taken and converted by Toney to make the score 2-0.
The Lions were unable to generate any of their signature late-game magic, recording zero shots in the match's final 10 minutes as Tennessee Tech salted away the remaining time to claim the title.
Anna Johnson led Lindenwood with three total shots and two shots on goal in the match. She was followed by
Mackenzie Compton and
Maddy Vasiloff with two shots with an attempt on goal each.Â
Caroline Ritter finished the contest with five saves.Â
