MACOMB, Ill. - Lindenwood men's basketball (14-16, 9-10 OVC) fell in overtime on Tuesday in Macomb, Ill. against the Leathernecks of Western Illinois (11-19, 5-14 OVC) by a final score of 86-81. The Lions led by five with 90 seconds remaining, but a three from WIU with 2 seconds left forced the game into OT.
Four Lions scored in double-figures on Tuesday including
Anias Futrell who scored 23 points marking the fifth time this season Futrell has scored over 20. Te St. Louis, Mo. native shot 8-16 from the floor including 3-9 from three and 4-4 from the foul line. He also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while adding two blocks.
Reggie Bass also scored in double-figures with 18 points. Bass was held to 4-17 from the floor in the loss, but went 9-11 at the foul line. He also added four rebounds and dished out a season-best seven assists, one shy of his career-high. Lindenwood assisted on 15 of their 29 made field-goals.
Jadis Jones came on late in the game scoring 13 points on 5-7 shooting while going 3-3 at the foul line. Graduate student
Markeith Browning II also added 11 points with three rebounds, four assists and two steals. LU forced Western Illinois into 12 turnovers resulting in 15 points.
Jordan Wildy also had nine points.
Lindenwood dominated the painted area scoring 44 points down-low while WIU had 36. Western Illinois was effective from three down the stretch going 8-20 for the game while Lindenwood was held to 7-31 from deep which is their most in a game this season. Rebounding was dead even at 40-40 with the Lions grabbing a season-high 17 offensive rebounds.
Through the first five minutes of the game Lindenwood led 11-6 after a Jones layup. Lindenwood would extend their lead to seven points with 12:39 remaining at 15-8. Western Illinois came back to tie the game with 7:02 left while taking the lead at 6:33 after a Sean Smith jumper (21-19).
The Leathernecks had their biggest lead of the half with 4:08 remaining at 28-21 when Lindenwood had a quick 7-0 run to tie the game just before the final first half media timeout. Smith would hit a buzzer beating three to end the first half as the Leathernecks went into the locker room leading 36-32.
Lindenwood shot 36.4% from the floor during the first 20 minutes including 4-16 from three while WIU shot 13-30 from the field. Futrell scored 17 of his 23 points in the first half while Browning II added seven points.
The Lions took their first lead of the second half with 15:32 remaining after a Bass layup and was followed by back-to-back buckets by Wildy to make it a five-point game. Lindenwood then stretched their lead out to 10 points (61-51) with 8:50 left after Bass hit his only three-pointer of the game.
After the Leathernecks cut the lead to two points with 2:25 left to play, WIldy nailed a three to get the lead back to five points. With two seconds remaining, Marko Maletic hit his third three of the second half to force the game into overtime at 73-73.
Lindenwood held the lead for the first two minutes of overtime but after a Ryan Meyes three with 2:24 remaining, it was all Western Illinois as they closed out the game to win 86-81. The Lions fell to 9-10 in OVC play with one game remaining.
It will be a meeting against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech on Saturday, March 1st for the Lions before heading to Evansville, Ind. for the OVC Championships next week. For more information go to lindenwoodlions.com.
