Softball Earns Series Win Over UT Martin On Monday

Lions split their double header ending the weekend series

MARTIN, Tenn. - Lindenwood softball (13-13, 3-3 OVC) ended their second Ohio Valley Conference weekend of the season with a 2-1 series win over UT Martin (10-13, 2-4 OVC) on Monday afternoon. After the Lions won on Sunday and lost the first game on Monday (3-0), Lindenwood bounced back winning in the top of the seventh in game three by a final score of 3-2.

UT Martin kicked the Monday double header off with a 3-0 win over the Lions after the offense was limited to four total hits. Anna Sanders went 2-3 at the plate while Tori Hatton went 1-3 with a double. Samantha Roulanaitis (L, 1-4) suffered the loss for the Lions after throwing a six inning complete game. Roulanaitis allowed three runs on four hits while picking up four strikeouts.

Both teams' offenses were quiet during the first half of game one. Hatton had her double in the second inning and was moved over to third with one out. The Skyhawks got out of the inning with two fly outs as the score remained 0-0.

UT Martin opened up the scoring in the fourth inning with all three of their runs being scored on four hits. Roulanaitis allowed back to back doubles to start the inning putting runners at second and third. The next two batters both had singles in the infield to score two runs. UTM ended the fourth with a sac fly bringing home the third and final run.

Lindenwood ended the game with six straight outs in the sixth and seventh innings as the Skyhawks were able to tie the series at 1-1 before heading into the final game of the three-game series.

Lindenwood was powered by a strong pitching forward from ace Avery Wapp (W, 5-3) picking up her fifth win of the season. Wapp threw a seven inning complete game in the circle allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out seven.

The Lions' offense complied 10 hits in game two during Monday's double header including a perfect 3-3 from Irelynn West. She added a double and a RBI while Jolie McMinn went 2-2 in the game with an RBI double. Danielle Franz gave the Lions an extra insurance run in the top of the seventh to help Lindenwood hold on to their third OVC win.

Both teams went scoreless in the first two innings before the Lions go on the board in the top of the third. After Sanders and Nicole Henson reached safely, West drove home the first run of the game with an RBI single to center field. Lindenwood left the bases loaded to end the inning. Martin then scored one run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.

Wapp went three straight innings between the fourth and sixth without allowing a hit. The Lions broke threw again in the top of the seventh after West started the inning with a double. She was brought home by McMinn who also had a double. With runners on the corners, Franz singled through the left side to score Hanna Johanning and put Lindenwood up 3-1. Wapp allowed one run in the seventh but got the strikeout to end the game as the Lions evened their record at 12-12.
