Women's Basketball Ends Historic Season In Super 16 Of The WNIT

Lions fall short against Louisiana Tech by a final score of 68-64

RUSTON, La. - Lindenwood women's basketball (23-11, 16-4 OVC) concluded their historic season on Wednesday, March 26th in the super 16 round of the WNIT after dropping a back-and-forth game against Louisiana Tech (18-15, 8-10 CUSA) by a final score of 68-64. The Lions end their season with their most wins (23) in their NCAA era while going 16-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play.

Ellie Brueggemann, the Lions' season leading scorer, ended her sophomore season with a team-high 18 points on 6-17 shooting while making two threes. Lindenwood was held to 6-24 from three-point range on Wednesday as three different Lions made two threes in the loss.

Mya Skoff and Brooke Coffey both had 12 points against La Tech. Skoff shot 5-8 from the floor while adding two triples. Coffey was a rebound shy of a double-double posting 12 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Lindenwood assisted on 14 of their 27 made field-goals.

Mykayla Cunningham, who made her first start since early December, scored 10 points on 5-12 shooting adding six rebounds and three assists. Gracie Kelsey was the fifth and final Lion to score in double figures adding 10 points and seven rebounds. Lindenwood's starters combined for 62 of their 64 points.

The Lions shot 27-72 for the game (37.5 FG%) while the Lady Techsters shot 26-56 (48.4 FG%) from the floor. Lindenwood's 72 field-goal attempts were their most in any game this season. La Tech out-rebounded the Lions 34-33 including 12-11 on the offensive glass. LU's six turnovers were their fewest in a game this season and only the second time they produced less than 10 in any game this season.

It was a 6-0 start for Louisiana Tech in the first quarter as Lindenwood started the game 0-6 from the field. Lindenwood climbed all the way back to take their first lead with 4:52 remaining at 9-8 after a three from Brueggemann. LU ended the quarter on a 5-1 run to take a 18-15 lead heading into the second quarter. Brueggemann and Coffey both had five early points for the Lions.

Lindenwood jumped out on a 8-4 run to start the second quater as they lead by seven with 5:53 remaining. They opened up their largest lead of the half at 11 points (35-24) with 2:17 remaining and headed into the locker room leading 37-27. 

The Lions out-scored La Tech 19-12 in the second quarter as the Lions shot 9-16 while holding Louisiana Tech to 5-12. Skoff and Coffey both had nine points to lead the way for the Lions. LU forced 12 first-half turnovers resulting in 13 points.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Louisiana Tech jumped out on a 15-4 run to take their first lead of the game since early in the first quarter by a score of 42-41. Coffey answered right back with a three of her own to put Lindenwood back on top by two. The Techsters kept pushing on offense getting their lead up to five with seven seconds left before Cunningham it a runner jumper to close the gap to three at 51-48.

With 8:21 left in the fourth, Skoff tied the game with a mid-range jumper at 55-55. A quick 4-0 from La Tech pushed the lead back out to 59-55. Lindenwood go the lead to as close as one point with 59 seconds left after a Bruggemann lay-up by the La Tech answered on their next possession to put them up three. Brueggemann with Under 20 to play put up a three to tie the game but it was no good as the Lions ended their first post-season run in program history during the Division I level.
