MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The Lindenwood men's hockey team (14-14-0) bounced back for a 4-2 win over Alaska Anchorage (5-21-1) on Saturday night to cap off their independent regular season schedule. Unconventional offense was the storyline for LU in the victory, with the Lions scoring two goals with only four men on the ice – including one short-handed – and adding an empty net goal in the contest's final minute.
Olivier Houde led the LU offense, registering two points (1-1-2) for his second consecutive multi-point performance, following up a three-point outing on Friday.
Jacob Fletcher,
Drew Kuzma, and
Charles Savoie also found the back of the net for Lindenwood.
Liam Beerman had another strong showing in net to move his record on the year to 9-5. He turned away several good chances for UAA, finishing the night with 30 total saves. He allowed just one goal before the Seawolves pulled their goalie in the final minutes.
LU outshot Anchorage 35-32 while both teams went a combined 0-7 on the power play.
The win leaves the Lions with a 6-4 overall record against their fellow independents as the five schools prepare to play in the inaugural United Collegiate Hockey Cup three weeks from now.
Game Overview
The Lions began the scoring in the sixth minute of the opening period with a short-handed goal by
Jacob Fletcher, as the freshman followed up a close range shot by
Jake Delaney that left the UAA goaltender sprawling and unable to recover for the save.
Jake Southgate also got credit for an assist on the play.
Alaska Anchorage responded late in the period with Tye Spencer goal that sent the game into the first intermission tied 1-1.
Lindenwood came out swinging with a pair of goals in period two, with
Drew Kuzma scoring from the middle of the slot on a turnaround wrist shot from his knees at the 2:28 mark before
Olivier Houde pushed the lead to 3-1 at 11:38 after crashing toward the net to tap in a rebound off a
Giovanni Morneau shot that deflected off the Anchorage goalie.
Despite combining for five power plays in the third period, the score remained 3-1 with under just a few minutes to play before UAA added an extra skater to find their second goal at the 18:08 mark to tighten things up. However, still needing another score to tie, the Seawolves decided to keep their goalie off and with 56 seconds remaining
Charles Savoie got behind the UAA defense and – after taking a pass from
Olivier Houde - casually guided the puck into the empty net for the dagger.
