Men's Volleyball Sweeps Queens On Thursday Night

CHARLOTTE, NC. - The Lindenwood Men's Volleyball team (16-3, 7-2 MIVA) got back into the win column on Thursday night behind a three set sweep on the road at Queens by scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 25-19. Jake Schreiner led the Lions offensively as he posted a match-high eight kills behind a hitting percentage of .375, while Owen Walsh, Luke Kraft, and Caden Whiteside all had six kills. Walsh finished the match with a .444 hitting percentage and the Lions hit .240 for the match compared to the Royals .057.

The duo of Whiteside and Schreiner wasted no time putting the Lions in front early on in the opening set as both Outside Hitters recorded two early kills to put Lindenwood up 6-2. Later in the set, Walsh delivered the first service ace of the match for LU and extended the lead to 14-9, but Queens responded with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 15-14 midway through the set. With the Lions up 18-16, Kraft picked up his second kill of the set to make it 19-16, and Amir Grant followed the kill by Kraft with a service ace to create some separation from the Royals. Kraft and Walsh would then pick up a key block to make it set point at 24-19, and Lindenwood went on to win 25-20 to take a 1-0 lead.

In set two, Schreiner, Grant, Walsh, and Kraft each recorded a kill and the defense recorded a block at the net to open up a five point lead by a score of 11-6. Zach Solomon added a service ace a few points later to open up Lindenwood's largest lead of the set at 14-8, and the Lions ended the second set with five straight kills from the offense to grab a 2-0 lead by a score of 25-20. LU was able to hit .269 as a team in the second set, while limiting Queens to a hitting percentage of .059.

To begin set three, Whiteside, Schreiner, and Kraft each picked up a kill as the Lions started the set on a 7-3 run, but the Royals kept it close as they cut the Lindenwood lead down to 11-10 after going on an extended 7-4 run. Owen Walsh and Whiteside put an end to the Queens run by recording back-to-back kills to make it 13-10, and Kraft added a solo block on the next point to put the Lions up four halfway through the third set. Queens committed six service errors over the final 11 points for the Lions, as Lindenwood went on to complete the sweep over the Royals by taking the final set 25-19.

Defensively, Lincoln Geist led the Lions with nine digs and was followed by Jake Schreiner who had seven, and Zach Solomon who had five. Owen Walsh finished the contest with a match-high five blocks and Luke Kraft added three blocks to his season total to lead the Lions at the net.

Lindenwood will wrap up their series with Queens on Saturday afternoon with first serve scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
