EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Lindenwood baseball team (25-20, 10-9 OVC) dropped their series opener at SIUE (25-21, 13-6 OVC) on Friday night by a score of 4-0. The Lions only managed three hits in the contest, matching their lowest single-game total of the season.
Josh Newell tossed all eight innings for Lindenwood, giving up four runs - two earned -Â on nine hits with seven strikeouts. It was his fifth outing of at least eight innings this season, and the second consecutive week he went eight innings in a shutout loss.
How it Happened
SIUE led off the home half of the first with an infield single and Chase Bloomer double to put two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Josh Newell got the next batter swinging with two strikes, but the pitch got away to the backstop and allowed a run to score and the struck-out Cougar to reach first safely to put runners on the corners. Following another strikeout, a well-placed sacrifice bunt brought in another run to put SIUE ahead 2-0 before Newell ended the inning with another punch out.
Following a scoreless second inning, another Bloomer double followed by a Ryan Niedzwiedz base hit up the middle plated a third run for the Cougars in the bottom of the third.
After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Lions moved two runners into scoring position with two outs in the top of the sixth but were unable to scratch any runs across.
SIUE added one more run to their lead in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff double down the left field line followed by back-to-back sacrifice bunts allowed Sean Kang to score.
With one out in the top of the ninth,
Filip Sarota recorded Lindenwood's third hit of the game with a double off the wall in left center, but the next two Lions were unable to avoid the shutout as the next two batters were sat down on strikes.Â
