EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Lindenwood baseball team (28-25, 12-13 OVC) dropped their series opener at Southern Indiana (26-26, 9-16 OVC) by a score of 8-4 in Evansville on Thursday night. The Lions recorded 10 hits in the contest but left 11 runners on base.
Kam Edwards got the job done in the leadoff spot, going 2-3 with a triple and three runs while also drawing a pair of walks.
Sam Driscoll also registered two hits while leading the team with two RBIs, while
Matt Graf went 2-4 with a double to join Edwards and Driscoll with a multi-hit performance.
How it Happened
After back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch in the top of the first loaded the bases, a throwing error in the USI infield on a fielder's choice allowed
Kam Edwards and
Charlie Isom-McCall to come home for the game's opening runs.
The Screaming Eagles threatened to score in the home half of the first with consecutive two-out base hits, but a
Josh Newell strikeout ended the inning with Lindenwood's 2-0 lead still intact.
However, Southern Indiana loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second before scoring two runs on a play nearly identical to the one Lindenwood scored on in the first, with the second baseman making an errant throw to first base while trying to turn a double play.
The Lions answered right back in the top of the third, with
Kam Edwards legging out a lead off triple before coming home to score the go-ahead run on a
Charlie Isom-McCall pop up single that found grass down the right field line.
Following a scoreless fourth frame, the Screaming Eagles loaded the bases with no outs, but were only able to bring across one run on a ground ball to tie the game at 3-3 heading to the sixth.
Southern Indiana would their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the sixth, with Parker Martin drawing a free pass to lead off the inning before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and advancing to third, which allowed him to score on a Collin Senior RBI base hit to right field through the right side.
The Screaming Eagles broke the game wide open in the bottom of the seventh. After loading the bases with no outs, Parker Martin cleared the bags with a double to right center that made the score 7-3. USI added one more run after a pair of fly outs allowed Martin to tag and advance to third and then home.
Lindenwood put two on with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but were only able to bring one run across with
Kam Edwards scoring on a
Jake Radosevich sacrifice fly.
