ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Lindenwood women's soccer team (4-4-1) prevailed 3-2 against St. Thomas (1-5-1) in a sweltering midday match at Hunter Stadium on Thursday. The contest featured a total of four penalty kick conversions, including all three of the Lions' goals.
Lindenwood set the pace early on, controlling the ball and taking four shots – including three on goal – through the contest's first 14 minutes compared to just one attempt for St. Thomas.
The Lions' early aggression would pay off in the 15th minute as the Tommies were called for a handball in the box following a video review, allowing
Sami Roggenkamp to convert from the penalty spot to give Lindenwood a 1-0 lead.
The Lions appeared to have scored another goal moments later, but the score was disallowed following another video review, with officials determining that an LU foul had been committed prior to the shot.
The decision proved crucial, with an errant pass in the 30th minute leading to St. Thomas' Ella O'Keef getting a shot at an empty net, which she calmly rolled inside the right post to tie the game.
Lindenwood kept the pressure on and, following another video review, they were rewarded with another penalty kick in the 44th minute after
Avery Thebeau was taken down inside the box. This time it was
Allison Schrumpf stepping to the spot and burying the ball into the back of the net to make the score 2-1.
However, the lead was short lived as the Lions were called for a handball in the box with just 17 seconds remaining in the half, allowing the Tommies to tie the game with a penalty kick of their own.
The game remained tied until the 78th minute, when
Sami Roggenkamp went down inside the box, drawing yet another whistle and point to the penalty spot by the head referee. St. Thomas appealed the call, but following a video review, the penalty was upheld and Roggenkamp finished the job with her second PK conversion of the match to give Lindenwood a late lead.
This time, the Lions were able to prevent a response from the Tommies and protected their lead to the final whistle to secure their second consecutive win.
