Jeremy Leake was in his sixth season as a women's basketball assistant coach in 2016-17. Leake played a key role while Lindenwood transitioned from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II level.

Last season, the Lady Lions had one of their best seasons during their NCAA era. The year was capped off by the team reaching the MIAA Postseason Tournament semifinals. In the quarterfinals, they upset the MIAA Regular Season Champion, Pittsburg State. Lindenwood finished the season with 14 wins, and it had the MIAA Freshman of the Year.

In 2015-16, Lindenwood advanced to the MIAA Tournament for the third time in three opportunities. Among its top victories was a 17-point non-conference win over Northern State, an eventual NCAA Tournament team. In 2014-15, Lindenwood recorded a perfect record during its regular season non-conference schedule. It also advanced to the MIAA Tournament for the second straight year, and recorded a win over No. 8 Washburn.

After a rebuilding year in 2012-13, Lindenwood had one of the biggest turnarounds in NCAA Division II in 2013-14 with an improvement of 10 wins. Lindenwood advanced to the MIAA Tournament in its first season of eligibility, hosted a first-round conference tournament game, and earned a postseason bid to the ECAC Division II Women's Basketball Postseason Championship. The Lady Lions also had one of their biggest wins in program history with a road victory over top-ten program Central Missouri.

In his first year at Lindenwood, the Lady Lions went 17-10 overall during their transition season to the higher level.
