Sean McLelland Earns A Spot On The U.S. Olympic Shooting Team

Mar. 16, 2008- Lindenwood shooter Sean McLelland earned a spot on the United States Olympic team on Sunday. McLelland finished second at the U.S. Olympic Trials for Skeet Shooting to earn one of eight spots on the United States Olympic Shotgun team.

McLelland entered last week’s shooting trial in second-place after recording a score of 243 during the fall competition.

On day one of the event, McLelland had the best day of any shooter by hitting 98 of 100 targets, which propelled him into first-place in the competition.

McLelland slipped a bit on day two of the event, hitting just 89 targets and falling to third-place, two targets behind Mark Weeks for the final spot on the Olympic team.

McLelland regained his form during the first two rounds on Sunday, hitting 24 of 25 targets in each round. Weeks hit just 22 targets in the second round, placing the two shooters in a tie for second-place going into the final round.

In the pressure-filled final 25 targets, McLelland was able to hit 24 of them, two more than Weeks, to secure second-place and a trip to China this summer.

McLelland finished the competition by hitting a total of 502 targets. He was second to Vincent Hancock, the 2007 World Cup Italy Champion and 2007 Pan American Games gold medalist, who hit 511 targets.
