Football Improves To 5-0 On The Season

The No. 3 Lindenwood football team scored the final 45 points of the game as it defeated Avila by a 59-7 score in Kansas City.

In just one half, Philip Staback completed 15-of-18 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. Two of his touchdown passes were to Matt Bramow as the Lions led 35-7 at halftime. The final half saw the Lions defense shutout the Eagles and the Lindenwood backups scored three more touchdowns and a field goal.

Despite Lindenwood posting gaudy offensive numbers once again, the turning point of the game came on a Lion punt. Avila scored a touchdown late in the first quarter to cut Lindenwood's lead to 14-7 and had momentum after the Lions' offense went three-and-out. Nick Somes turned the tide back in Lindenwood's favor with a 70-yard punt that backed Avila up to its four yard line. The Lions' defense also got a three-and-out and the Eagles only managed a 22 yard punt giving Lindenwood the ball on Avila's 33. On the very next play, Staback found Bramow for a 33-yard touchdown reception and Lindenwood was never threatened again.

The Lions finished with 563 total yards, including 360 through the air. David Ortega threw for 47 yards and Brett Ballmann had 80 passing yards and a touchdown. Bramow finished with four catches for 66 yards. Marcel Thompson had the most catches with seven receptions, and Rudy Fleming led in receiving yards with 77 and he scored once. Cameron Fore, in his first collegiate game, had a 66 yard touchdown reception and also rushed for another touchdown. Lindenwood had 203 rushing yards total, led by Ortega who had 105 yards on the ground, including a 55 touchdown on a quarterback sneak. Richard Murrell and Zach Booker also added rushing touchdowns.

Defensively, Dan Carlisle had a team-high eight tackles. Lindenwood forced three turnovers, with Cody Fogle and Brandon Gould getting interceptions and Chris Howard recovering a fumble. Halley Ferrell had another perfect day kicking with eight extra points and a season-high 44 yard field goal into the wind.
