Lindenwood Ends Regular Season With Perfect 10-0 Record

The No. 3 Lindenwood football team completed an undefeated regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 73-6 victory over William Jewell. The 2009 Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) champions improved to 10-0 and had their second perfect regular season since 2004.

The Lions could not have written a much better script for their Senior Day contest as Lindenwood jumped out to a big lead early on and were able to empty its bench in the second half in order to keep its players fresh for next week's NAIA Football Championship Series game.

Lindenwood took the opening kickoff and only needed seven plays to go 62 yards for the first touchdown of the game. LeMarien Parson finished off the drive with a three-yard run less than three minutes into the game. On the kickoff, Lindenwood's special teams scored the first of its two touchdowns when Cameron Fore forced a fumble that Cody Fogle picked up at the 12 yard line and ran in. The Lions defense forced a quick punt on William Jewell's first offensive possession, and Lindenwood marched down the field again, scoring on a Parson four-yard rushing touchdown to lead 21-0 after just eight minutes of play.

The Lions would add a field goal late in the first quarter and scored three touchdowns in the second. The Lions' touchdowns in that quarter came on a Philip Staback pass to Matt Bramow, and rushing touchdowns from Roren Thomas and Rudy Fleming. The lone bright spot for the Cardinals came on a 31-yard pass completion that helped set up their only touchdown of the game late in the first-half.

In the second-half, Lindenwood's defense completely shutdown William Jewell's offense, allowing no points and just 85 yards of offense. The Lions made four more trips to the endzone, as Fleming, Thomas, Richard Murrell and Cameron Fore all scored to help Lindenwood score its second-high point total in school history.

Lindenwood finished the game with 560 yards of offense, including 367 in the first two quarters. The Lions had 271 yards on the ground and 289 passing.

Hakim Thomas
The defense held William Jewell to just 177 yards. The Cardinals averaged just 0.6 yards per rushing attempt, as they had 19 yards in 33 carries. Lindenwood also forced three turnovers in the game. The 19 rushing yards were the fourth-lowest allowed by a Lindenwood defense in a single-game in school history.

The Lions' special teams also came up big with two touchdowns, two blocked punts, and a blocked extra point. Thomas had a highlight film punt return touchdown to go along with Fogle's score, and Parks Peterson blocked two punts. Halley Ferrell had a perfect day kicking with 10 PATs and one field goal, and Nick Somes' lone punt was downed at the William Jewell 11 yard line.

Staback completed 20-of-26 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He was under center for nine series and led Lindenwood to six touchdowns and one field goal. Fleming was the top receiver with four receptions for 61 yards and Thomas caught four passes for 53 yards. Seven other Lions also caught at least two passes in the game. On the ground, Murrell had a team-high 78 yards, seven more than Thomas. Five different Lions rushed for at least one touchdown.

Defensively, Brandon Gould had a team-high six tackles and one interception. The other turnover came when Alex Meraz forced a fumble that was recovered by Joseph Hanks.
