The No. 1 Lindenwood women's ice hockey team wrapped up its five game road trip with a 3-2 win over No. 6 Rhode Island. For the second straight day, the game between the two teams was decided by one goal.
Mandy Dion got Lindenwood on the board first with a power play score in the final minute of the first period. Rhode Island would score twice in the second period, but
Lisa Moreau added a score of her own to send a 2-2 tie into the final period.
Kali Frederick notched the eventual game winner at the 7:32 mark of the third and the defense would shutout the Lady Rams the rest of the way to secure the win.
Rebecca Bernet rebounded from her worst outing of the season, stopping 30 of 32 shots in goal. Both Dion and Federick finished with an assist each and three others also had one helper apiece.
Saturday night, Lindenwood raced out to an early lead, but could not hold on against Rhode Island, falling 6-5 in overtime. The Lady Lions, who led 3-0 after the first 11 minutes of the game, saw their 11 game unbeaten streak snapped.
For the second straight day, Lindenwood jumped on the Lady Rams early and often.
Mandy Dion scored less than two minutes into the contest and moments later
Alexandra Johansson would add a power play score to give the Lady Lions an quick two goal lead.
At the 10:51 mark of the first period, Dion would convert a power play goal to give Lindenwood a commanding 3-0 lead. However, the Lady Rams would score twice before the period ended cutting the deficit to 3-2.
In the second, Rhode Island scored first to tie the game, but Johansson responded with her second power play tally to put the Lady Lions back on top 4-3. Rhode Island would score moments later to even the score once again.
In the final minute of the second period,
Shea Crawford found the back of the net on a power play situation to give Lindenwood a 5-4 advantage going into the final frame.
The Lady Rams would tie the game midway through the third and neither team could break through over the final nine minutes. Rhode Island would win the game in overtime, scoring less than four minutes in to even the weekend series.
Rebecca Bernet surrendered a season high six goals on 37 shots and suffered just her second loss this season. The Lady Lions had 38 shots on goal, but were held scoreless in the third period for just the third time this season.
Shannon Murphy finished with three assists and five others had at least one.
On Friday, Lindenwood pushed its winning streak to 10 games with a 5-3 road victory over No. 6 Rhode Island.
Miranda Schrock set the tone early with a goal in the opening moments and the Lady Lions would hold on to a 1-0 lead going into the middle period.
Sarah Oliphant scored at the 5:40 mark of the second, and
Ashley Rebeck would make it 3-0 with a tally shortly after.
Rhode Island responded with a score minutes later, but Dion was able to slip the puck past the Lady Rams' goalie seconds before time expired in the period to push the Lindenwood lead back to three.
Trailing 4-1 entering the final period, Rhode Island scored twice in a span of four minutes to trim the lead to one, but a
Brett Lobreau power play goal with just over eight minutes remaining would seal the victory.
Bernet earned the win in goal, stopping 31 of 34 shots and four Lady Lions each finished with an assist.
Lindenwood (22-2-1) will return home next weekend to host Penn State for a pair of games.
