Lady Lions Finish 2-1 at Lindenwood Classic

The No. 24 Lindenwood volleyball team wrapped up the Lindenwood Classic with a sweep of rival Missouri Baptist 25-18, 25-19, 25-20. The Lady Lions finished the weekend with a 2-1 record.

Ellen Fandry led the team with 13 kills against the Spartans. Alexandria Malam totaled 17 assists and Kelsey Biggs had 16. Katie Weber converted two aces.

Defensively, Alyssa Showers posted 14 digs and Kelsey Jo Vogler collected five blocks.

Lindenwood was swept by No. 8 Columbia earlier today. The Cougars proved to be too much for the Lady Lions, winning 25-13, 25-21, 25-17.

Kristy Dreisewerd logged a team-high 10 kills, and Kelsey Kennedy finished with seven. Biggs recorded 15 assists and seven digs. Showers posted 17 digs and Dreisewerd and Vogler each had three blocks.

On Friday, Lindenwood swept conference rival Baker in the opening match of the Lindenwood Classic. The Lady Lions turned back the Wildcats 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.

Early on it appeared Baker was prime to upset the Lady Lions. The visiting Wildcats sprinted out to a 10-5 lead in the opening set. Weber keyed a 7-0 run with a pair of kills and a block that pushed Lindenwood ahead 12-10. Tied at 15, the Lady Lions slowly pulled away. A Fandry putaway capped a decisive three-point spurt that gave the team a four point lead at 21-17, and Weber closed out the set with a kill moments later.

Lindenwood asserted itself early in the second game, building a 9-6 lead. After the Wildcats cut it to two, the Lady Lions scored four of the next five points led by two Kennedy kills. The game would stay close, and it appeared Lindenwood had pulled away for good when it took a 20-16 lead. However, a quick timeout sparked a Baker five point outburst. Trailing for the first time all game, the Lady Lions answered emphatically, scoring five straight points of their own to take the second set. Once again, Kennedy fueled the run with a pair of kills.

Baker took the first point in game three, but that would be the last time the Wildcats would lead. Lindenwood methodically built a six point lead, and stymied any late attempts of a comeback by Baker. Fandry ended the match with one of her team-leading 12 kills.

Kennedy also posted 12 kills in the victory. Biggs tallied 21 assists and Malam finished with 15. Weber converted two aces.

Defensively, Showers logged 12 digs, and Weber collected four blocks. Victoria Krause added three blocks.

Lindenwood (16-10, 4-1)will play Benedictine next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
