Men's Ice Hockey Set to Wrap Up Regular Season This Weekend

This Week:

The Lions wrap up the home schedule with a pair against Robert Morris. The Lions will honor seniors Chris Abbott, Tim Gardner and Devin Raney in a pre-game ceremony before Saturday's game.

Scouting the Lions:
The Lions split their weekend series against Illinois last weekend. After an impressive 5-1 win last Friday, Lindenwood followed that with a tough 3-4 shootout loss. The Lions remained ranked #1 in the country after the seventh ranking period…. Lindenwood is averaging 6.2 goals per game offensively, while only surrendering 2.1 goals per game…. Sophomore Chad Boeckman continues to lead the team in points with 61. He has 26 goals and 35 assists on the season…. Junior Cory Spradling and sophomore Adam Krefski are tied for the team lead in goals with 29…. Sophomore captain Colin Long regained the lead in assists with 36…. Krefski leads the team with 9 power play goals…. Spradling leads the team with his 5 short handed goals…. Krefski leads the team in game winning goals with 6…. Long leads the team with a +/- rating of +57…. Junior Robi Cavallari continues to lead all goaltenders with his 18 wins, a 1.77 GAA, .932 SV% and 2 shutouts…. The Lions have converted on 63 of 191 (33.0%) of power play chances and have killed off 189 of 207 (86.5%) of power play chances against this season…. Lindenwood centers have won 1286 of 2001 (64.3%) of face-offs this season. 

Scouting the Eagles:
Junior forward Matt Olson leads the team in scoring and goals with 28 points on 15 goals and 13 assists…. Junior forward Bart Reeves leads the team in assists with 17…. Freshman defenseman Joe Wanat leads all d-men in scoring with 15 points…. Junior goaltender Dan Venet leads the team with a 3.98 GAA.

Lindenwood and Robert Morris Series:
Lindenwood leads the all-time series 19-1-0 over Robert Morris, including winning their last 18 games.

Last Time vs. Eagles:
Lindenwood finished the sweep in Chicago with a 7-2 win…. Cory Spradling and Steve Balint paced the offense with two goals apiece… Chris Abbott stopped 38 of 40 shots in the win. 

British Columbia Connection:
The Lions have five players from the province of British Columbia in Canada. Chris Abbott, Carson Hamill, Jake Ebner, Russell LaForest, and Robi Cavallari all hail from the BC area.

Homegrown Talent:
Lindenwood is proud to have 9 players from the local St. Louis area. The list includes: Alex Roth, Lucas Scherer, Cory Spradling, Tim Gardner, Ian Coppersmith, Steve Kowalczyk, Zach Glazer, Grant Gorczyca, and Chad Boeckman.

Lindenwood in National Rankings:
Lindenwood is again ranked #1 overall in the country for the 7th ranking period. The Lions received 31 of 40 first place votes.

Special Teams:
Lindenwood is 63 for 191 on the power play which is a 33.0% success rate. The penalty killing unit killed of 189 for 207 power play chances against. They killed off 86.5% of power play chances against.

ACHA First:
Last season marked the first time that the same school produced the men's and women's DI national champions. The men's program won their first national title, while the women's team racked up their third title and became the first team ever to win back to back in the women's division.

Career Power Play Goals:
Junior Jake Ebner is tied with former Lions Dan McNabb for the career lead in power play goals with 34.

Senior Night:
The Lions will honor senior's Chris Abbott, Tim Gardner and Devin Raney in a pre-game ceremony starting at 3:45 before Saturday's 4:00 pm face-off. 

St. Louis Jr. Blues Alumni:
Bret Morrell, Ryan Divito, Tim Gardner, Grant Gorczyca and Cory Spradling all are alumni of the Tier3 Junior A powerhouse.

St. Louis Bandits Alumni:
Mike Leone, Ryan Divito, Tyler Bowman, and Grant Gorczyca all are alumni of the back to back to back NAHL champions.

Absent “A”:
Junior Cory Spradling is wearing the alternate captains “A” while Carson Hamill is out of the line-up.

Lindenwood Milestones:
Steve Balint is 23 points away from 200…. Neeco Belanger is 15 goals away from 50 and 17 points away from 100…. Jake Ebner is 4 goals away from 100, 2 assists away from 100 and 6 points away from 200…. Carson Hamill is 10 games away from 100 games played and 20 assists away from 100…. Adam Krefski is 3 goals away from 50…. Colin Long is 10 points away from 100…. Cory Spradling is 18 goals away from 100.

Sophomore Ian Coppersmith has changed from #4 to #28.

New Face:
Sophomore transfer Jake Coyle joins Lindenwood after playing last year for NCAA DIII Utica College. He recorded 13 points in 24 games for Utica.

Lindenwood assistant coach Rick Zombo hosts a weekly radio show on Team 1380 ESPN Radio on the AM dial or on the web at www.team1380.net. The show highlights the local hockey scene and can be heard every Tuesday night at 6 pm. 

Injury Update:
Freshman Alex Roth had surgery on his quad muscle after taking a hit at Arizona State. He will be out 2-3 weeks…. Junior Ryan Divito was out of the line-up last weekend with a shoulder injury and should be back this weekend.

Oh Captain, My Captain:
Sophomore defenseman Colin Long has been named captain of the 2009-10 Lions. Senior defenseman Tim Gardner and Junior forward Carson Hamill will serve as alternate captains. Junior forward Cory Spradling is serving as an alternate captain for the injured Carson Hamill.

Up Next:
The Lions will travel to Ames, Iowa for the CSCHL conference tournament next weekend.
