Lindenwood Picks Up a Pair of Wins Against MidAmerica Nazarene

The Lindenwood baseball team earned its second straight sweep of a conference opponent Tuesday evening, defeating MidAmerica Nazarene 13-4 and 2-1 at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

Lindenwood posted 13 hits in game one, including five that went for extra bases. The Lions fell behind 3-0 after the top-half of the first, but platted two runners in their half of the inning to trim the lead to one. Lindenwood would add three more in the third and fifth, before tacking on five more in the sixth.

Shelby Anderson, Carlos Pianetta, and Mike Gumm each collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Zach Malawey went four and one-third innings to pick up his team-leading fifth win of the year. He was responsible for all four runs scored by the Pioneers and struck out seven.

Anderson provided all the offense Lindenwood would need in game two. After working the count full in the third inning, the Lions' first baseman drilled a ball to centerfield for his eighth homerun of the season. His two-run shot would hold up as starter Randy Serrato went six innings, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out five.

A key moment in the game came in the top of the sixth when MidAmerica had advanced two runners into scoring position with only one out. Serrato proceeded to strike out the following batter, and induced an inning ending groundball to escape trouble. Joey Vega worked the seventh for his third save of the year.

Lindenwood (20-8, 5-3) travels to Liberty, Mo. this weekend for a HAAC series against William Jewell.
