Lindenwood Open is Dominated by the Home Team

Lindenwood Table Tennis hosted the Lindenwood Open over the past weekend and the hosts dominated the play from the very beginning.

Jose Barbosa took the highest honors this weekend by winning the open singles event over teammate, Fernando Yamazato by the closest of margins (8-11,11-8, 8-11, 11-3, 12-10). On the way to the finals, Barbosa defeated fellow Lions Paulo Rocha and Lady Lion Livia Mizobuchi.

In the U-2350 singles event, Fred Cantarelli captured top honors by defeating Karin Fukushima in five games (11-8, 5-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-7). The U-2150 singles event was won by Yuvraaj Dookram over teammate, David Cabrera. Lady Lion, Esther Gusov, lost in the finals of both the U-1500 Singles and the U-1250 event in four games.

Sunday's competition was made up of six giant round robins. Each group had 7-9 players with near equal ability. Group A, with the highest rated players, was made up of seven Lindenwood players and one player from Indiana. Yamazato exacted revenge on his teammates by beating every one of them to go undefeated and claim bragging rights for the day.

Group B, with the next highest rated players, saw Dookram overtake his teammate Kris Frank for the title. In Group E Gusov returned to action and took no prisoners as she defeated eight straight players to remain unblemished.

Next up for the Lions is the National Collegiate Table Tennis Championships April 9-11 in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
