The Lindenwood men's wrestling team won the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday. Seven of the team's 10 wrestlers placed in the 32-team event, including two champions.
Half of the Lions finished in the top three which helped Lindenwood compile 131 team points. Wisconsin-La Crosse was runner-up with 109.5 points. Wisconsin-Parkside and Indianapolis were third and fourth, respectively, with both having over 100 points.
Chris Chionuma and Deron Winn both won their respective weight classes. Chionuma was 4-0 at 174 pounds, including one fall and two major decision victories. Winn won five matches on the way to the 197 pound title, with one major decision and one pin.
Third-place finishes went to Brandon Benvenuti, Derrick Weller, and Clayton MacFarlane. Benvenuti lost his first match at 125 pounds but won six straight after that. Among his victories were two pins, one technical fall, and two major decisions. Weller and MacFarlane both reached the semifinals before suffering a loss. Weller went 5-1 at 141 pounds with two pins and two major decision wins. MacFarlane also went 5-1 at 165 pounds including two pins and one major decision victory.
Steven Butler finished seventh at heavyweight and Dirk Hurrin was eighth at 184 pounds. Butler went 4-2, including two pins and two major decision victories. Hurrin was 3-1 before suffering an injury.
Lindenwood will compete next weekend at the Missouri Valley Open.
