Colgate Women's Hockey Wins Game One of Series With Lindenwood

The Lindenwood women's hockey team played Colgate fairly even for most of the game on Friday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y., but a flurry of goals late in the first period led to a 7-2 loss for the Lady Lions.

The early part of the first period was scoreless for both sides until Colgate scored just under the 10-minute mark. The Raiders added their second goal four minutes later. The biggest turning point in the game though was two Colgate goals within a 35-second span that made the score 4-0 late in the first period.

In the second period, Lindenwood scored the lone goal, marking the first time this season that the Lady Lions outscored a team for a period. Colgate thwarted any possible comeback attempt by scoring just 17 seconds into the third period. The Raiders added two more goals late in the period before Lindenwood scored one more time with 2:24 left.

Lindenwood was outshot 49-23 in the game, but just 24-17 over the final two periods. The Lady Lions outshot the Raiders 10-6 in the second period and could have cut into the lead even more, but they were 0-for-5 on the power play for that period. The Lady Lions could not convert on any of their eight power-play opportunities, while Colgate was one-for-six on the power play.

Alison Wickenheiser scored her team-high third goal of the season in the second period. That goal was assisted by Samantha Redick and Caitlyn Post. The third-period goal for Lindenwood was a shorthanded score by Alyssa West, her first collegiate score. Wickenheiser assisted on that score.

Both West and Wickenheiser led the team with four shots on goal, and Wickenheiser finished with a +1 rating for the game. Kendra Broad had a team-high three blocks and Post won 16 faceoffs and was successful over 60 percent of the time. Taylor Fairchild made 42 saves in goal and stopped 85.7 percent of Colgate's shots.

The two teams will skate again on Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. faceoff in Hamilton, N.Y.
