Lady Lions Advance to Championship Match in the Locos Grill Transition Tournament

The Lindenwood women's volleyball team had a dramatic late comeback on Friday night in Hyland Arena in the semifinals of the Locos Grill Transition Tournament. The Lady Lions advanced to the finals over William Jewell by scores of 22-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19, and 15-13.

After falling in a 2-1 hole in the match, Lindenwood hit .425 in the fourth set to force a deciding fifth game. In that set, the two teams were tied at eight when William Jewell ran off three straight points. A pair of sideouts made the score 13-10 and put Lindenwood just two points away from a loss.

Kristy Dreisewerd recorded a kill to get the Lady Lions within 13-11. With Angela Cichelero serving, Lindenwood then scored four more straight points for the victory. The first two points came on kills by Erin Anselman and Katie Weber. A Cardinal hitting error gave Lindenwood match point, and Weber and Anselman ended the contest by blocking a William Jewell attack.

Lindenwood had a major statistical advantage for the match. The Lady Lions had 10 more kills, 15 more digs, and six more blocks. They hit .245 for the match, compared to .190 for William Jewell.

Ellen Fandry and Anselman were the individual leaders for Lindenwood. Fandry had a double-double of 20 kills and 18 digs, she hit .333, and also recorded three blocks and an ace. Anselman had 18 kills and two blocks, and also hit over .300. Weber and Dreisewerd both had 11 kills. Weber had six blocks and Dreisewerd added four. Kelsey Jo Vogler was the fifth player in double-figure points with seven kills and five blocks.

Kelsey Biggs led the team with 61 assists and also had 18 digs. Kaila Schrimpf had a team-high 30 digs, and Patsy Erb recorded 17 digs and two service aces.

With the victory, Lindenwood advances to the finals of the Locos Grill Transition Tournament, where it will face Minot State on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Lady Lions will bring a 26-13 record into their final match of the 2011 season.
