The Lindenwood women's hockey team found itself on the wrong side of NCAA history on Wednesday night in Erie, Pa. when it fell to No. 5 Mercyhurst by a 9-0 score.
Lindenwood's defense did not allow an even-strength goal for the first 30 minutes of the game. In a six-minute span though late in the first period, Mercyhurst scored three power-play goals to grab a 3-0 advantage. The Lady Lions' defense eventually gave in to the barrage of Lakers' shots, as Mercyhurst scored two times during the second part of the second period, and five times in the third period.
Lindenwood's
Taylor Fairchild played all 60 minutes in goal and made 57 saves. The team's first forward line accounted for seven of the team's 10 shots on goal, including three each from Allyson Arcibal and
Alyssa West.
Mercyhurst goalkeeper Hillary Pattenden earned the shutout after making 10 saves. She set the NCAA Division I record for career victories with her 92nd all-time win.
Lindenwood will play one more contest against its future conference rival and one of the top teams in college hockey. The Lady Lions and Mercyhurst will faceoff on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Erie.
