The University of Missouri Science and Technology Miners scored 19 first-half points and held off a late Lindenwood rally for a 19-13 victory over the Lions.
The first half was dominated by the Miners. Lindenwood was held to a season-low four yards rushing on 13 carries. The Miners forced two turnovers and recovered an onside kick.
Missouri S&T scored the only three points of the first quarter, and widened its lead in the second quarter with 16 more points to take a 19-0 halftime lead. Lindenwood was held scoreless for the entire first half for the first time since 2005 when Culver-Stockton blanked the Lions in the opening half. The Miners gained 19 first downs compared to Lindenwood's five. The Lions lost two costly fumbles, one in the red zone, and the Miners capitalized on all three of their red-zone opportunities to grab the halftime advantage.
The Lions began a comeback attempt with just under 10 minutes left in the third quarter when
Therman McGowan ran in a touchdown from 20 yards out. After surrendering 234 yards in the first half, the Lindenwood defense was able to slow down the home team in the second half. The Miners were able to gain only 108 yards in the second to give the Lions a chance to come back.
The lead was cut to six with 9:18 remaining when
John Uribe completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to
Terance Jackson. Later in that quarter, Lindenwood stopped the Miners on third down and forced a punt with 2:11 to go in the game. After converting on a third down and three, the Lions gained seven on the ensuing play. On second down, quarterback
John Uribe was flushed from the pocket and threw an interception that sealed the win for the Miners.
On the night, the Lions outgained the Miners 367-342. The Lindenwood ground game was held to just 69 yards compared to the Miners' 147. For the game, the Lions were just 2-for-12 on third downs.
Uribe was 21-of-39 for 298 yards with a touchdown and one interception. McGowan led the way for Lindenwood rushing with 69 yards and one touchdown. Through the air,
Andrew Helmick led the team with 123 yards receiving.
Chris Howard led the defense in tackles with nine, while
Donald Collier made seven stops.
Tyler Epstein and
Joe Day each tallied a quarterback sack.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 3-1 on the season. Lindenwood travels to NCAA Division I South Dakota next weekend.
