James Neal Kicks Game-Winning Field Goal In Victory Over Northern Colorado

James Neal kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired in the game to give Lindenwood its biggest regular season victory in program history. The Lions knocked off NCAA Division I FCS Northern Colorado by a 22-20 margin.

Northern Colorado took a 20-19 lead with 1:10 remaining in the game when Dave Eden kicked a 25-yard field goal. Lindenwood came right back, sparked by a 44-yard kickoff return by Andrew Helmick. John Uribe completed five-of-five passes for 46 yards in the final drive. The biggest was a 28-yard pass that Helmick acrobatically caught at the two-yard line. After a two-yard loss on a running play, Lindenwood called timeout and Neal kicked his third field goal of the game.

Northern Colorado scored a touchdown on its first possession after going 12 plays and 65 yards, and scoring on an eight-yard pass from Seth Lobato to David Deans. Lindenwood had two long drives early in the game but had to settle for Neal field goals on both. After a Lions' fumble early in the second quarter, the Bears had to go just 36 yards to take a 14-6 lead. Lindenwood finally got in the endzone with 9:23 left in the second quarter on a Therman McGowan one-yard run.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Lions took their first lead of the game at 19-14 with 11:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. Uribe completed a short pass up the middle to Denodus O'Bryant, and O'Bryant outran everyone for a 71-yard touchdown reception.

Northern Colorado kicked a field goal on its next possession and Lindenwood was forced to punt after a dropped pass on third down near midfield. The Lions' defense had the Bears backed up to third-and-25 on their next possession, but Northern Colorado got a second life with a 30-yard pass completion. An energized Northern Colorado offense completed several more passes to get into the redzone, leading to the field goal that put the Bears ahead temporarily.

Lindenwood finished with 447 yards of offense, compared to 263 for Northern Colorado. Lindenwood had 131 yards rushing and 316 passing. Lindenwood also won the time of possession battle by nearly 10 minutes. Defensively, the Lions held Northern Colorado to four-of-16 on third down conversions, and allowed just 101 rushing yards and 162 passing yards.

O'Bryant finished the game with 97 receiving yards and 65 rushing yards. McGowan also rushed for 73 yards. Helmick caught eight passes for 77 yards, and Alex Robinson had four catches for 75 yards. In his first game as a Lion, Uribe threw for 294 yards and had one touchdown and one interception.

Defensively for the Lions, Tyler Epstein had a team-high 10 tackles, including one for a loss. Brock Reed had nine tackles and one sack. The Lions had five tackles for loss and two sacks in the contest.

Lindenwood has its home opener next Saturday against Graceland, with the game starting at 6 p.m.
