Volleyball Defeats McKendree In Five-Set Thriller

Box Score The Lindenwood women's volleyball team defeated the McKendree Bearcats on Tuesday evening at Hyland Arena in a five-set thriller. A service ace just dumping over the net by Patricia Erb sealed the deal for the Lady Lions, as they fought back in the fifth set after dropping the first and the fourth sets of the night.

The Lady Lions started off pretty even with the Bearcats, before jumping out to an 18-11 lead in the middle of the first set. Within moments, the Bearcats crawled back by going on an 11-2 run with streaks of back-to-back kills. Lindenwood could never control the Bearcat momentum and ultimately fell, 25-23.

Lindenwood fought back in the second, and promptly jumped to a 17-11 lead. The Lady Lions maintained their lead this time, as they proceeded to hold McKendree to just two more points in the entire set.

With a 6-1 start in the third, including three kills by freshman Kayla Guyot, the Lady Lions controlled the pace into the middle of the set. McKendree slowly found them back in it, bringing the score to 15-all before taking an 18-16 advantage. A true back-and-forth battle pursued until the end, where the Lady Lions finished on top, 29-27.

McKendree was out for revenge after the third, as they held the Lady Lions to a 25-14 margin in the fourth. The fifth set was all Lindenwood after the first three points, as the Lady Lions built momentum to take the fifth, 15-10.

The two teams have now split during the season, as McKendree defeated Lindenwood at the Arkansas Tech Spikefest back in September.

The Lady Lions hit .239 as a team tonight, and held McKendree to a .224 clip. Five Lindenwood members recorded double-digit kills, led by Kelsey Kennedy with 17. Guyot recorded 14 kills at a .542 mark and led the team in blocks with six. Erin Anselman tallied 13 kills while Megan Dillon knocked down 11 kills and recorded five blocks in her first match since the second contest of the season.

Emma Brydels tallied 54 assists for the night, topping her career-high of 53. She was one dig away from a double-double. Schrimpf led the Lady Lions defensively with her 20 digs while Erb and Allison Waldvogel each recorded 12.

The Lady Lions improve to 9-7 for the season. They next head to Bolivar, Mo. for the Southwest Baptist Purple Bash this Friday and Saturday.
