Lady Lions Win Three of Four at Miami Tournament

The Lady Lions won three games and lost one at the Miami University Tournament in Oxford, Ohio March 17-18.  Lindenwood topped the host of the event along with Eastern Michigan University and Grand Valley State University, but lost in overtime to Michigan, the top ranked team in the country.

The Lady Lions started the tournament in impressive fashion on Saturday as they topped Miami University (Ohio) 19-4.  In a balanced attack, Meghann Kopecky, Christa Khatcherian, Kayla Kutinac and Stacy Fischer all had three goals each.  Arianna Conger and Candice Cherry helped out with three assists a piece.  On defense, Fischer led the team with five steals while Kopecky and Paige Reeb had three each. Marlee Lyons and Katie Tunney combined for nine saves at goal.

In the second game of the day, Lindenwood pressed Michigan into two overtimes before finally falling 9-8.  It was a close game the whole way as both teams scored two goals in the first quarter.  As the game progressed into the second and third quarters, the Lady Lions opened up a slim lead and managed to hold it into the fourth.  With 3:31 left in regulation, Lindenwood held a two goal lead, but the experienced Wolverines continued to battle and managed to tie the game and send it to overtime.  In the first extra session, defense prevailed as neither team could find the back of the net and that trend continued well into the second overtime until Michigan broke the deadlock with only a minute left.  The Lady Lions didn't give up and had a chance to send the game to a third overtime, but the last second shot hit the post and bounced away.

Coach Marko Cubranovic was happy with the way the Lady Lions played despite the loss, “This was by far the best performance this year,” he said.  “This team sent a clear message that they will not go down easily to anyone!”

Kopecky led the offense in the game with four of the team's eight goals and Emily Caise had four steals on defense.

Lindenwood bounced right back after the tough loss, taking it out on Eastern Michigan with a 17-1 win.  Five players scored multiple goals for the Lady Lions led by Kutinac who had five.  Dee Fleuriot added four, Cherry and Gabrielle Thornton each had three while Reeb had two goals.  Tunney was impressive on the defensive side of the ball as she had seven saves at goal.  Reeb and Thorton helped with five steals each while Lucia Crivolio added four.  Crivolio also led Lindenwood with six assists.

In the single game on Sunday, the Lady Lions found themselves in a battle with Grand Valley State, but prevailed 5-3 in the contest.  Lindenwood wasn't able to open any type of lead until the second half, but strong defense that resulted in 22 steals eventually helped seal the win for the Lady Lions.  Fleuriot, Conger and Deana Mendoza led the team with four steals each and Marlee Lyons had seven saves at goal.  On offense, Kutinac had three of the five goals while Khatcherian and Fleuriot added single tallies.

Lindenwood improved to 15-5 on the season.  The Lady Lions get a month off before heading back on the road for the second of two Heartland Division conference tournaments in Ames, Iowa April 14-15. Among the four scheduled games, Lindenwood will face host Iowa State University, along with cross town rival Saint Louis University.
