Women’s Water Polo Wins Second Straight Heartland Division Championship

Women's water polo defeated Washington University in the semifinals and topped the University of Minnesota in the finals to capture its second straight Heartland Division Championship in Grinnell, Iowa on Sunday.  The Lady Lions beat the Bears 17-4 and then stopped the Gophers 13-6 to earn the title. 

In the first game of the day, Meghann Kopecky led the Lindenwood offense with five goals while Kayla Kutinac added three.  Arianna Conger and Stacy Fischer pitched in with three assists each.  Fischer was also a standout on defense as she forced nine of the 22 total steals for the Lady Lions while Katie Tunney was solid at goal with nine saves.

In the championship game, Kutinac helped key the offense with five goals; Kopecky, Conger, Fischer and Deana Mendoza added two each, and Gabrielle Thornton and Christa Khatcherian scored once.  Conger also had three assists.  Mendoza led the defense with three steals and Tunney and Marlee Lyons combined for five saves at goal. 

The Lady Lions finished the conference season at 8-0 and then went a perfect 3-0 in the tournament.  They will take their 22-5 overall record into the first round of the Collegiate Water Polo Association National Collegiate Club Championships May 4-6 in Tallahassee, Fla.  Lindenwood will face the University of Oregon in the first game on May 4.
