Lions Drop 4-2 Decision to Top-Ranked Minot

The Lindenwood men's ice hockey team lost 4-2 from two third period goals by No. 1 Minot State Saturday afternoon in the second game of the weekend series in North Dakota.

After a scoreless first period, Minot State scored a goal from a loose puck in the crease only 2:19 into the second stanza to go up 1-0. The Beavers extended the lead on a wrap-around midway through the period.

Lindenwood capitalized with the extra man on a delayed penalty in the final minute of the period when Daniel Rosse buried a rebound to make it 2-1 Beavers after 40 minutes of play. Steve Brancheau tied the game on the power play in the first minute of the third. Rosse and Brandon Rumble recorded assists on the play.

Special teams became a factor again midway through the period when the Lions were called for a penalty and Minot State scored on the man advantage to put the Beavers up 3-2 at the 10:53 mark of the third.

A few minutes later, Minot State added a goal off a turnover in the slot to increase the lead. The Beavers defense held the Lions scoreless in the closing minutes to earn a 4-2 win and sweep Lindenwood in the two-game series.

LU netminder, Trey Flesch stopped 23 of 27 shots in the contest. With the loss, the Lions fall to 3-5-0 overall on the season while Minot State improved to 6-0-0 in ACHA competition and 10-0-0 overall.

The Lions will have to regroup after the long road trip to Minot. Lindenwood will face conference rival Illinois on the Big Pond in Champlain, Ill. on Friday and Saturday. The puck drops at the University of Illinois Ice Arena at 7:30 p.m. both nights.
