Gold Squad Splits Four Games Against DI Competition in Colorado

The Lindenwood roller hockey gold team went 2-2 at the Rocky Mountain Inter-regional in Colorado Springs, Colo. on November 23-24 against four of the top-15 Division I teams in the country.

In the opening game of the weekend the team defeated Colorado State 7-3. Charlie Robinson stopped 20 of 23 shots in net for the Lions while Justin Steller led the offense with two goals and an assist. Trevor Borja had a multiple-point game with a goal and an assist.

Brennan Sowa made 27 saves and Josh Holmes and Mitch Moeller each netted goals but the Cal Poly Broncos proved too much for the Lions and defeated LU 6-2.

Lindenwood faced Arizona State in the third game of the day and fell in a close battle with Sun Devils 5-3. Sowa stopped 28 shots while Moeller scored twice.

The Lions concluded the tournament with a 7-5 comeback win in final game on Sunday against UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second period before the Lions offense began firing. Lindenwood scored a goal late in the second period and six goals in the third to earn a 7-5 win. Moeller scored two goals and added an assist while Parker Poore had a goal and two helpers. Sowa stopped 21 of 26 between the pipes.

Coach Jon Hilke commented on the comeback victory.

"This was one game I will never forget! The guys really battled and I am very proud about the way they responded late in the game. They could have just thrown in the towel but they didn't."

The weekend tournament was the last action of 2013 for the Lions. The team has an extended holiday break before the season resumes in January. At the break, the Lions are the top team in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) B Division with a 9-3 record.
