The Lindenwood wrestling team traveled to Edmond, Okla. on Sunday for the MIAA Conference Tournament where
Matt Greene (174 lbs.) continued his successful season by finishing third in his weight class.
Greene finished with a 2-1 record in the tournament. In the third-place match Greene faced Fort Hays State wrestler Travis Budke, who had just beaten Greene by major decision a week ago. Greene would avenge that loss by taking the third-place match by a 5-2 decision.
"The Fort Hays State wrestler had just beaten Matt by 10 or 11 points not long ago, so beating him in the third-place match was a big win for him," Lindenwod coach
Chad Smith said.
Four other Lions placed fourth individually. Blayne Shockley (125 lbs.),
Derrick Weller (157 lbs.),
Padric Lynch (197 lbs.) and
Matt Atley (285 lbs.) all picked up one win apiece and finished fourth in their respective weight classes.
All but two of Lindenwood's victories were won by decision. Shockley's victory came by technical fall, while Atley pinned his opponent for a win.
Coach Smith was encouraged by his team's performance on Sunday.
"It was a good start to our postseason," Smith said. "I saw a lot of things we need to improve and a lot of things we did well at the same time."
The Lions will continue their postseason run in Wichita, Kan. on Feb. 2 when they compete in the NCWA Conference championship.
