The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team found some more late-game magic on Friday night at the Lindenwood Ice Arena with a 3-2 victory over Robert Morris. The Lady Lions forced overtime with 40.2 seconds left in regulation and then won on a penalty shot just 55 seconds into the extra period.
Lindenwood fell into a 2-0 hole during the game. The Colonials dominated the first period but scored just one time as
Nicole Hensley made 16 saves to keep the game close. Lindenwood started to even up the play in the second period, but Robert Morris was still able to go up 2-0 at the 13:15 mark.
The Lady Lions finally got on the board with a power-play goal late in the second period.
Katie Erickson scored with just 11.9 seconds left with a shot from near the blue line.
Jocelyn Slattery and
Lyndsay Kirkham assisted on the goal.
In the third, Lindenwood could not score for most of the period and appeared in trouble after Robert Morris went on the power play with less than two minutes remaining. Lindenwood was able to get an extra attacker on the ice with under a minute to play. Fifteen seconds later,
Lyndsay Kirkham tied the game at two.
Alyssa West and
Caitlyn Post assisted on the game-tying goal.
In overtime, Lindenwood was able to kill off Robert Morris' power play and get control of the puck.
Alison Wickenheiser put a shot on goal for Lindenwood and, while the puck was loose on the goal line, a Colonial player covered it up. That penalty gave Lindenwood a penalty shot and Wickenheiser converted to give Lindenwood a 3-2 win.
Robert Morris outshot Lindenwood 41-29, including an 11-2 mark on the power play. The Colonials were unable to score on five power-play chances, including a five-on-three in the third period for over a minute. Lindenwood was one-for-three on the power play and had the shorthanded goal at the end of the game.
Hensley finished with 39 saves, including numerous from point-blank range.
Katie Erickson finished with a +1 for Lindenwood.
Megan Cox, Slattery, and
Chelsea Witwicke all finished with two blocked shots.
Lindenwood and Robert Morris will play again on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Lindenwood Ice Arena. The Lady Lions could move into a fourth-place tie with a victory over last year's CHA champions.
