Men's ice hockey scored a power play goal with just 1.2 seconds remaining in regulation to steal a 3-2 victory from Iowa State Friday night in Ames, Iowa.
The Lions capitalized on a power play just 39 seconds into the game when Riley Spraggs set up Tobias Nasgarde for a quick strike goal, but that would be the only offense from Lindenwood until much later in the contest. Â Neither team found the back of the net the rest of the first, so the Lions held a 1-0 advantage heading into the second, a period that would belong to the Cyclones. Â Iowa State tied the game and eventually took a 2-1 lead on two even strength goals.
That left the third period for some Lindenwood heroics. Â The Lions tied the score at two on another power play goal with 14:25 remaining. Â Jake Fairchild set up Mike Lozano who did not miss on the chance. Â Both sides had opportunities to take the lead, but the goaltending was rock solid. Â With the clock running down, the Cyclones took a penalty and Lindenwood went on the power play. Â In a mad scramble as the final seconds of the period clicked off the clock, Spraggs and Mitch Riese gave Rock Einersen a chance and he split the pipes to seal the deal. Â
Iowa State outshot the Lions 38-26, but Lindenwood net-minder MIchael Halls stopped 36 of the 38 shots he faced to claim the win. Â Special teams was the key as the Lions scored all three of their goals on the power play, going 3-5 in man-up opportunities. Â The Cyclones were held scoreless in three power play chances.Â
Lindenwood improved to 2-4-1 overall and the victory was the second straight for the Lions after they started the season winless in their first five contests. Â They'll go for a sweep of the two game set Saturday night against Iowa State. Â The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. once again in Ames, Iowa. Â
