Lions Defeat Eagles in Shootout

For the second day in a row, men's ice hockey knocked off the top ranked Eagles of Robert Morris, taking the game in a shootout to earn a 4-3 win Saturday evening at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.  Lions goaltender Michael Hails was peppered with pucks, but stood tall, stopping 40 of 43 shots to get a well earned victory.

In a game that neither team held more than a one goal advantage, Lindenwood scored first, just 88 seconds into the first period.  Tobias Nasgarde was set up by Jeremy Edwards and Daniel Rosse on an even strength play.  Robert Morris countered on the power play to tie the game with 6:41 left and it was 1-1 heading to the second.

Once again, the Lions scored early, getting a man advantage goal from Brandon Rumble just 21 seconds into the period.  Kevin Walters and Lukas Daniels earned the helpers on the play.  As they did in the opening frame, the Eagles tied the score again with an even strength effort later in the second.

Robert Morris took its first lead of the contest just over two minutes into the third period, but Peppi Sipila and Rock Einersen combined to set up Rumble for his second power play score of the game and it was all square at 3-3 for the rest of regulation.

After a scoreless overtime period, Walters took the first attempt for Lindenwood in the shootout and immediately found the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.  The first Robert Morris shooter missed, which set up Mike Lozano who buried his shot to put Lindenwood ahead 2-0.  When the Eagles were denied again, the Lions walked off the ice with their second straight win against the number two ranked Robert Morris squad and notched their fifth straight victory overall.

Lindenwood earned the win despite being outshot by a two to one margin, 43-21.  In a penalty filled affair, the Lions went 2-8 on the power play while holding the Eagles to one goal in four chances.

Lindenwood is now 5-4-1 for the season and 4-0-0 in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League.  The Lions will continue their stretch of six straight conference games when they host the University of Illinois October 31 and November 1.  The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and the puck drops at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
