The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team opened up conference play on Friday night in Rochester, N.Y. with a tie against the defending CHA champions. The Lady Lions tied RIT by a 1-1 margin.
Â
RIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead one period, but it could have been a lot worse for Lindenwood. The Tigers outshot the Lady Lions 19-9 in the period, but the only shot that got past
Nicole Hensley was on a power play at the 8:12 mark.
Â
Lindenwood evened out play the rest of the game, including outshooting RIT 18-16 for the final two periods and overtime. The Lady Lions tied the game midway through the second period on a goal from
Katie Nokelby, the first of her college career.
Lyndsay Kirkham and
Leah Elledge assisted on the score.
Â
That was the final goal of the game as Hensley and her RIT counterpart did not allow another goal. Hensley finished with 34 saves. Nokelby led the team with six blocks, and
Katie Erickson had a team-high five shots.
Â
Lindenwood and RIT will play game two of the series on Saturday afternoon.
