Women's Hockey Unbeaten In CHA Play After 3-1 Win Over RIT

The Lady Lions hockey program picked up a big 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at RIT. Lindenwood went 1-0-1 in first conference series of the season, which came against the defending CHA champions.

Lindenwood's power play has struggled early this season, but the Lady Lions recorded an important power-play goal in Saturday's win. With the score tied 1-1 in the final period, Lindenwood had a six second five-on-three power play. It wasn't able to score with the brief two-man advantage, but just six seconds after the RIT fourth skater returned, Britannia Gillanders got two shots off. The second one crossed the goal line to give the Lady Lions a 2-1 lead.

Another short five-on-three played a role late in the game. RIT went on the power play with 3:07 left when Carrie Atkinson was called for interference. Three seconds before Atkinson returned, the Lady Lions committed another penalty. RIT, which was up three skaters after pulling its goalie, got a quick shot off after the faceoff, but Atkinson got the puck after returning to the ice and sealed the game with an empty-net goal.

RIT took 40 shots in the game but Nicole Hensley made 39 saves in the game. The only goal she allowed came midway through the second period and it put the Tigers up 1-0. Lindenwood answered at the 18:11 mark of that period with a goal by Shara Jasper.

Katie Erickson, Jasper, and Alyssa West all had assists in the game. Brooke Peden led the team with five blocks. Five players had a positive plus/minus, including a +2 by Atkinson and Jasper.

Lindenwood is now 2-5-1 on the season. The Lady Lions return home next weekend for a two-game series against Robert Morris.
