Winning Ways Continue Against Illinois

While the current winning streak was started on the road, the Lions took advantage of home ice to keep things rolling with their third victory in a row at the Lindenwood Ice Arena, and sixth straight overall as they shutout Illinois 5-0 Friday night.  Cody Karpinski continued his strong play between the pipes, stopping 19 of 19 shots for the win.

The Lions scored what became the game-winning goal midway through the first period when Peppi Sipila broke free and lit the lamp on an unassisted, short-handed play.  Lindenwood extended its lead with just over two minutes left when Brandon Rumble split the pipes off an assist from Tobias Nasgarde.

The scoring combination clicked again with 15:47 left in the second when Nasgarde set up Rumble on the power play to make it 3-0 in favor of the Lions.  With momentum clearly in favor of Lindenwood, the offense struck again with 2:23 remaining.  Mike Lozano and Stephen Bopp assisted Riley Spraggs for the goal to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Lions continued to play strong defense as the seconds ticked away in the third, but also kept an eye on the back of the net, and they found it with 2:58 remaining when Daniel Rosse fed Lozano for the final score of the game.

Lindenwood outshot Illinois 26 to 19 and went 1-3 on the power play while holding the Illini scoreless on six chances.

The Lions improved to 6-4-1 overall and maintained a perfect record in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League at 5-0-0.  Lindenwood will try to keep rolling in the second game of the two-game series Saturday afternoon.  The opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
