The Lindenwood women's hockey team stayed above .500 in conference play after defeating Penn State on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Lions knocked off the Nittany Lions in University Park, Pa. by a 2-1 margin.
Â
Alyssa West was the top story of the day for Lindenwood. Her goal early in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game-winner. The goal was the 61st career point for West, which puts her in sole possession of first place on Lindenwood's all-time points list. The goal was the 23rd of her career, but it was the first time that she scored a game-winning goal.
Â
The Lady Lions won with a stifling defense that allowed just 11 shots on goal. That was the fewest shots that Lindenwood has allowed during its NCAA era. Lindenwood also committed just one penalty and did not allow a shot while on the penalty kill.
Â
While the game ended well for Lindenwood, it got off to a bad start. Penn State scored on its first shot just 72 seconds into the contest. Lindenwood outshot the Nittany Lions 10-3 the rest of the period, but Penn State led 1-0 after one period.
Â
The two teams combined for just seven shots in the second period, including Penn State having just two. Lindenwood tied the game though with less than five minutes remaining when
Shara Jasper off an assist from
Lyndsay Kirkham.
Â
Lindenwood continued to control the puck in the third period and it paid off when West scored at the 4:10 mark.
Britannia Gillanders and
Jordyn Constance assisted on the goal. Penn State tried to tie the game late, hitting the pipe once and having three shots after pulling its goalie.
Nicole Hensley stopped each shot though, including two in the final 14 seconds.
Â
Brooke Peden ended the game with a +2 plus/minus, which led the Lady Lions. Jasper had a team-high seven shots, and she also tied with Constance with two blocked shots.
Â
Lindenwood improves to 4-7-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. The Lady Lions return home next weekend for a series against Syracuse.
