The Lions began their current winning streak with a road victory against Oklahoma back on October 11, and they extended it to eight straight by edging those same Sooners 2-1 at home Saturday night. The victory also was number 100 for head coach Rick Zombo on the Lindenwood bench.Â
For well over the first half of the game, it didn't look like either team would score, but Lindenwood finally broke through on the power play when Brandon Rumble lit the lamp for an unassisted tally with 6:49 remaining in the second period. Four minutes later, another man-advantage chance ended with another Lions goal. Mike Lozano and Graham Zagrodney set up Kevin Walters for what would prove to be the game-winner. Strong defense and goaltending from Cody Karpinski kept Oklahoma shutout until the final minutes of the contest.
Lindenwood was strong on special teams, scoring its only two goals on the power play in four opportunities. The Lions held the Sooners to 0-4 with the man-advantage. Oklahoma outshot Lindenwood 37-32, but Karpinski stopped all but one of them to earn the victory.
The Lions improved to 8-4-1 and will lace up their skates for the series finale Sunday afternoon. The puck drops at 2 p.m. at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
