Lindenwood's women's basketball team fell to the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers 73-67 in the opener of a Thursday night doubleheader.
Lindenwood got off to a slow start, letting the Lopers take control early, but the Lady Lions bounced back. The Lady Lions shot a better percentage in the first-half by shooting 42.9 percent from the field while the Lopers shot only 38.9 percent from the field. The Lopers still managed to go into the break with a 40-35 lead.
Kassidy Gengenbacher got off to a good start with 21 points and
Vanessa Zailo had 10 rebounds in the first half.
The Lady Lions started out the second half fast, taking the lead and staying just ahead of the lurking Lopers. Lindenwood looked to be in the driver's seat going into the final two minutes, but Nebraska-Kearney had other ideas.
Behind some clutch shots, the Lopers managed to take the lead and hold onto it until the end of the game. Gengenbacher added 16 points to her total in the second half, while Zailo added seven more rebounds.
Gengenbacher led the Lady Lions with 37, despite going one-for-nine from beyond the arc. Gengenbacher made up for her three-point shooting by going 14-for-17 from the free throw line.
Jenny Rocha chipped in with 11 points while Zailo continued to gather an impressive number of rebounds, with 17.
The loss dropped the Lady Lions to 6-3 overall and 0-3 in MIAA play. Coming up next for the Lady Lions is another home game against Washburn University on Saturday December 20th, at 1:00 PM.
