Lions Get Shootout Victory over Iowa State

In a game that went to overtime, it even took extra attempts in the shootout before the Lions outlasted Iowa State 2-1 Friday night at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.

Jake Wynd put the Lions on top early when he found the back of the net at 3:39 in the first after being set up by Brandon Rumble and Mitch Riese.  Lindenwood held that lead for over half of the game until the Cyclones tied the score at one with 2:38 remaining in the second.  That was all the offense that the two teams could muster as the contest stayed knotted for the rest of regulation and through the five minute overtime period, forcing a shootout.

The Lions took the first attempt and Kevin Walters immediately buried his effort to give Lindenwood a 1-0 advantage, but Iowa State answered to tie the shootout.  Mike Lozano netted his shot to once again give the Lions the lead, but the Cyclones were equal to the task.  Stephen Bopp misfired on his attempt giving Iowa State a chance to win, but Lindenwood goaltender Cody Karpinski denied the Cyclones, to force the shootout into sudden death.  Rumble was the next shooter for the Lions, and after assisting on the only regulation goal for Lindenwood earlier, he immediately buried his shot for a 3-2 lead, forcing Iowa State to score on their next attempt to stay alive.  But, Karpinski once again stoned the Cyclones effort, giving the Lions the victory.

Despite the lack of scoring, both teams were successful in putting the puck on net.  Lindenwood outshot Iowa State 41-30.  Karpinski stopped 29 of the 30 regulation and overtime shots he saw and made the final two saves in the shootout to earn the win for the Lions.

The victory gave Lindenwood a 10-7-2 record overall and a 7-1-1 mark in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League.  The Lions and Cyclones will finish the two game series Saturday afternoon with the opening faceoff at 4 p.m. at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.  The game can be seen live via pay-per-view live streaming through STL Sports Productions.
