Box Score The Lindenwood women's hockey team swept its weekend road series with Penn State. The Lady Lions won Sunday's game in University City, Pa. in overtime by a 4-3 margin.
Lindenwood won the second game of the series with its special teams unit. The Lady Lions scored both times they went on the power play, while Penn State was scoreless in five power-play attempts. That helped Lindenwood overcome being outshot 47-25.
Penn State got on the board first at the 11:52 mark of the first period, but the Lady Lions scored twice in the final five minutes of the period to take the lead. The first goal came on the power play when
Katie Erickson scored with assists from
Alyssa West and
Chelsea Witwicke. The second goal came with just 51 seconds left in the period when
Jocelyn Slattery scored with assists from
Lyndsay Kirkham and
Kendra Broad.
Lindenwood extended its lead early in the second period when Kirkham scored on the power play.
Rachel Weich and Slattery assisted on that goal which was the only goal of the period.
The Lady Lions appeared in control midway through the third period, but Penn State fought back to force overtime. The first goal came at the 9:45 mark, and the game-tying goal came at the 18:24 mark while the Nittany Lions had an extra attacker on the ice.
In overtime, Penn State dominated early on taking eight shots on goal the first three minutes of the extra period. None of those shots found the back of the net and Lindenwood took advantage at the 3:20 mark when
Kendra Broad scored the game-winner, with an assist by Kirkham.
Nicole Hensley was outstanding in goal again, making 44 saves in the contest.
Katie Nokelby was a +2 for the contest, while
Carrie Atkinson, Slattery, and Kirkham were all +1.
Lindenwood returns home next weekend for a two-game home series against Syracuse. The games are the final home contests of the 2013-14 season for the Lady Lions.
