With a come-from-behind effort in the third period, the roller hockey gold team won the title game over Michigan State B 4-3 to capture the 2014 National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) B Division Championship at the IceWorks Arena April 13 in Aston, Pa. It was the fourth straight year that the Lions lifted the B Division trophy.
The march to the title began in Pool A with round-robin play April 11-12. The Lions skated away from Slippery Rock B 10-1 Friday night. The first period was all Lindenwood with four unanswered goals. Justin Steller scored at even strength and then followed with a power play effort. Adam Dowling lit the lamp at 8:41 and Evan Schulte turned the tables on a short-handed chance. The onslaught continued in the second with scores from Mitch Moeller and Park Poore before Slippery Rock finally broke the shutout with a goal at 5:17. Alex Griffith made it 7-1 for Lindenwood and Moeller split the pipes for a second time late in the period on a power play. The Lions continued to pressure in the final period, which proved to be a rough one with 16 minutes of penalties called between the two squads. Lindenwood added goals from Patrick Dowling at even strength and Jeff Arscott on the power play for the final margin. Patrick Dowling was given MVP honors for his goal and three assists. Trevor Borja also received honors for his four assist effort, as did Adam Dowling for his goal and two assists.
Lindenwood faced Arizona State B in the second round of pool play and earned a solid 4-1 win. It was a close contest early with the teams trading goals in the first nine minutes of the opening period. Spenser Marquiss lit the lamp for the Lions at even strength. The Sun Devils tied the game at the 8:51 mark, but Lindenwood answered just 53 second later when Ricky Guadagno split the pipes with the score that proved to be the game winner. The defense clamped down while the offense added another score from Guadagno and an unassisted tally from Borja. Neither team found the back of the net in the third as the Lions skated to the win. Goaltender Charles Robinson was given MVP honors as he went 14/15 in save opportunities. Guadagno was honored for his two goal effort.
The final game of pool play against Michigan State B proved to be much closer for Lindenwood and an accurate preview of what the championship match would be like. The Spartans took the lead in the first, but the Lions answered less than 90 seconds later on a power play goal from Borja. At the first intermission, the score was tied 1-1. Defense ruled most of the second as it took until the 8:19 mark for anyone to find the back of the net in the period, but once someone did, it opened the flood gates. Moeller lit the lamp at 8:19 for the Lions, then Schulte scored on the power play, but Michigan State answered with two goals and the score was tied again at 3-3 heading to the third. Justin Steller capitalized on a power play early for Lindenwood for a 4-3 advantage. The Lions nursed the lead until Borja gave the team some insurance with a goal at 8:13. The Spartans pulled to within one on a power play late, but Lindenwood held on for a 5-4 victory. Borja was given MVP honors for his three point effort on two goals and an assist.
With the 3-0 effort in pool play, the Lions earned a bye in the opening round of elimination bracket play. They faced an upstart Central Florida team in the quarterfinals on April 12 and escaped with a 4-3 win in overtime. The Knights had only earned one point in Pool B, but they gave the Lions all they could handle. Central Florida took the lead on an unassisted play just 2:44 into the first. Lindenwood was able to tie the score on a goal from Borja at 9:12. The Lions looked like they were pulling away in the second when Schulte lit the lamp twice, but an even strength score at 7:17 pulled the Knights back within one. Lindenwood had a 3-2 lead for most of the third period, but an unassisted score from Central Florida at 7:42 tied the game 3-3. That's how it stayed the rest of regulation and the two teams headed to overtime. With a spot in the semifinals on the line, play was crisp and clean in the extra frame with neither team wanting to make a mistake, but the Lions finally found an opening when Adam Dowling fed Marquiss for the game-winner at 5:54. Schulte was the top player overall for Lindenwood with three points on two goals and an assist.
The semifinal was a rematch against Arizona State B, and just like the first meeting in pool play, the Lions earned a 4-1 victory, but it was the Sun Devils that led early. Most of the opening period was scoreless, but Arizona State broke the shutout at 11:42 and took a 1-0 lead into the second. Lindenwood was held in check for the first five minutes, but finally scored the equalizer on a shot from Parker Poore. Just 40 seconds later, the Lions took the lead on a goal from Marquiss, and the margin was extended to two on an unassisted, short-handed score from Justin Stellar at 11:23. Much like the first, the third period was scoreless until the final minutes when Moeller added some insurance for Lindenwood at 10:22. Steller was one of the top players for the Lions with three points on a goal and two assists, and the entire defense played a key role, only allowing eight shots. With the victory, Lindenwood advanced to the finals against another familiar foe from pool play, Michigan State B.
The title game was worthy of a championship final. Neither team led by any more than a single goal and the final outcome wasn't decided until the last few minutes. The Lions lit the lamp first late in the opening period on a goal from Thompson Teague, but the Spartans answered just 29 seconds later and the two teams headed to the second tied 1-1. Just 21 seconds into the frame, Michigan State split the pipes for a 2-1 lead, but Lindenwood battled back at the midway point to tie the score on a play from Joshua Holmes. With the contest even at 2-2, the final period began ominously for the Lions when the Spartans scored just 58 seconds into it. For the next 10 minutes, it looked like that goal might hold up as the game-winner for Michigan State, but Lindenwood took advantage of a power play opportunity and Steller hit the back of the net with the tying goal at 10:52. After clinging to a slim lead for so long, the equalizer late in the third appeared to rattle the Spartans a bit. Just 57 seconds later, the Lions got the game-winner when Dowling set up Schulte at 11:49. As the clock ran out, Lindenwood celebrated its fourth B Division title in a row.
With six wins in the championship, the Lions improved their season record to 29-4 overall. Before beginning the title run, the gold squad captured the Great Plains Collegiate Inline Hockey League B Division with a 9-1 win over the black squad, compiling a 10-2 record in conference.
